オーウェルの人間ガンジー論

The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection, that one is sometimes willing to commit sins for the sake of loyalty, that one does not push asceticism to the point where it makes friendly intercourse impossible, and that one is prepared in the end to be defeated and broken up by life, which is the inevitable price of fastening one’s love upon other human individuals. 記念すべき第一回目の引用は『ガンジーについての感想』という１９４９年のエッセイから。オーウェルは１９５０年に４６歳という若さで亡くなっていますので、最晩年の評論です。

ガンジーは聖人と崇める人もいます。聖人の対極にあるのが人間であるならば、その人間の本質とは何かという問題について考えを巡らせた含蓄に富んだ一文です。非常にオーウェルらしい文章で、that、which節で繋ぐことで長文になりながらも、音読すると非常に小気味いいリズムを味わえることと思います。まずは、辞書を引きながら、読解に挑戦してみてください。次回普段授業で行っているような解説を加えます！
